Why are we walking on the Left on Greenways in Ireland? It is very confusing dangerous, and at odds with RSA walking guidelines.

We have many beautiful greenways and shared paths in Ireland. However, we see signs telling us to WALK ON THE LEFT PASS ON THE RIGHT.

Road Safety Authority: Guidelines state the opposite: If there is a footpath, you must use it. If there is no footpath, you must walk as near as possible to the right-hand side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

Why is this not applied to greenways?

Walking on the left on greenways in Ireland is not alone confusing but extremely dangerous. When a person on a bicycle or scooter is approaching people walking on the left from behind, sometimes the people walking are wearing head phones are not aware there is a cyclist or scooter about to pass them. Even if the cyclist or scooter is ringing a bell sometimes the walkers cannot hear them. Young children cannot see them either. It is a bit startling if you are walking and a bike or a scooter quickly passes you.

How dangerous and confusing it is now for school children who may have to walk some distance on the road to or from school? Maybe walking on the left the evening before on the greenway and now walking on the right on the road the following day.

Encouraging pedestrians to walk on the right facing oncoming cyclist or scooters on greenways in Ireland, mirroring road traffic guidelines, would I believe, enhance safety and efficiency for everyone using shared pathways.

This practice would help reduce frustration and collisions between walkers, cyclists, scooters users, promoting a much smoother and safer flow, ensuring that users can navigate the space with greater awareness and respect for each other, ultimately fostering a more enjoyable and structured experience for all.
